Step 1.  You MUST begin with a download of the TOOLS version of Express.  DO NOT use the Microsoft web installer unless running Ver 7 and so far, few have been able to get it to succeed.

Step 2.  Select a NEW installation after starting the setup, of a standalone SqlServer.  The SETUP will test the machine to see if the required support for the install meets the requirements.

Step 7.  If Managment Studio is not installed, or Reporting Client SKIPS are reported, some options may not be selected.  As long as no failures are noted otherwise, proceed to the next screen.  If you have followed instructions, you SHOULD get a windows firewall warning on this screen.

Step 10.  If Managment Tools is not selectable but the Database Engine is, continue.  Management Studio would likely already be installed from another Instance installation.   It is important to take off any prior version of Management Studio unless you have just installed it from the links provided.

You are now ready to Install ILookPI if you pass one further test.

The last test is to run the cmd prompt : C:\sqlcmd -L

This should return your machine name and instance sqlServer name (SQLEXPRESS) at that prompt.   The installation is now 100% complete, awaiting only an ILookPI.EXE installation to complete the process.
